Dean of the Faculty

Welcome to Reed's Office of the Dean of the Faculty

Sabbatical Application Information

Complete the following steps to apply for a sabbatical, turn in proof of external funding applications, request sabbatical expense funds, and submit your sabbatical report. For more details on the application process please refer to the memo from the Dean of the Faculty, or review the presentation from the Sabbatical Q&A session held every spring.

Steps

Submit a request for a sabbatical to the Committee on Academic Policy and Planning - DUE SPRING SEMESTER

Approval to be on sabbatical/leave is granted by the President and is based upon CAPP’s recommendation. To gain CAPP approval for sabbatical/leave, please complete the request form during spring semester.

Due Date: April 15, 2025

Complete the Sabbatical Fellowship Award Application

Applying for a Sabbatical Fellowship Award to support a junior sabbatical or a second semester of senior sabbatical is separate from applying for approval for the sabbatical itself. You cannot take a sabbatical without applying for one; applying for a Sabbatical Fellowship does not replace applying for the sabbatical itself. The earlier you apply for a sabbatical or leave, the sooner your department, CAPP and the college can begin planning for your absence, including initiating searches when necessary. The applications are reviewed by the Sabbatical Fellowship Award Committee.

Due Date:  September 15, 2025

Attach two Letters of Support for your Sabbatical Fellowship Applications (if they are not being sent directly to the Dean鈥檚 office)

Letters should be addressed to the Dean of Faculty and should contain a candid expert evaluation of the intellectual merits of your proposed project and of your ability to accomplish what you propose. To the extent possible, letters should come from persons with expertise in the relevant field or area of specialization. At least one of these letters should come from outside of the institution. They can be sent directly to the Dean’s office or you can submit them here.

Due Date:  September 15, 2025

Provide confirmation of two external grant applications (only for Sr Faculty applying for a full year of salary support)

You are required to certify that you have either received significant support — which may or may not be salary support — for your project from extramural funding agencies or are seeking such support from at least two such extramural entities. *In cases where extramural grant proposals will only be submitted after the Sabbatical Fellowship Award Committee makes its decision, the Committee’s decision will be provisional, pending subsequent submission and certification of extramural proposals. Please use the following submission form to provide copies or confirmations of your applications.

Due Date:  September 15, 2025*

Request sabbatical expense funds (call for requests will be sent out in the spring semester prior to your sabbatical)

All requests for support must be justified directly in connection with the specific research project for which the sabbatical was awarded. Each request will be evaluated in terms of the degree to which the proposed research funds are likely to contribute to the success of the project in question. You may request support for books, travel, journals, computer equipment, photocopies, photographs, prints, or student workers. Funding is somewhat more limited than it has been in the past but we will do what we can to accommodate your needs.

Due Date: March 15, 2026

Submit your Sabbatical Report (after you have completed your sabbatical)

A short summary of your work from your completed sabbatical should be submitted to the dean of faculty's office by the end of fall semester. This is required by Section C-12 of the Rules of Procedure.

Due Date: January 6 (the year after your sabbatical)
